The hills are beckoning
The big day approaches! It is clear from the number of Emails landing in the Fred Whitton mailbox that you are starting to think in detail about your plans for the weekend. Registration opens at 1.00 pm on Saturday and closes at 5.00 pm. Don’t forget your registration card (arriving soon) and some photo ID. So many riders last year forgot to bring their registration cards that we almost ran out of spares! This year there will be a £5 charge for a replacement I’m afraid!
All places for camper vans have now been taken with a few tent pitches still available.
Two things to think about:
Please, please put any wrappers/packets back into your pocket where they came from. You can always leave your rubbish with a marshal (they all have a rubbish bag) or at the feed stations.
Due to the road over Dunmail Raise unlikely to be open by the 8th May, many friends and supporters will not easily be able to get to Whinlatter – the popular centre for spectators. Use the shuttle bus service from Grasmere to Keswick and on to Whinlatter. For times and details visit www.stagecoachbus.com
What about sharing lifts? The fewer the cars the lesser the impact on the National Park. It will also make parking quicker and easier.
The culture of the ride is one of a personal challenge, the sort of thing that Fred would have approved of. It is not a place for ‘novelty’ bikes, tri-bars and following vehicles.
Let’s hope the weather improves!
